Freelance writers come in many shapes and sizes, and many have multiple different specialities: academic work, fiction, non-fiction, articles of varying styles and content. The list goes on. Technical writers are one of the many types you can find. What exactly their job entails is detailed below.
It is well known for freelance technical work that it is meant to have absolutely no voice. The work must offer no opinions or shades of meaning in their writing. Rather, it must be like a blank slate commentating on a particular topic, not offering or revealing about the person behind the job to the reader. This can be particularly difficult, especially because it is so different from all other sorts of writing. Easy examples of how to go about making your work impersonal, however, is to avoid personal pronouns such as ‘I’, ‘we’ and ‘you’ and to stick to the passive voice, e.g. ‘it was done’ rather than ‘I did it’.
The sort of work that a technical writer does is aimed at helping someone who does not know or understand something to start understanding it. For instance, manuals for machines and electronic devices come under this category. These must be clear and factual in order that everyone can follow them. Some people may even be able to write them in multiple languages, if they are bi- or trilingual. Regardless of the language, these user guides or manuals should be easy to follow and written in clear formatting so that readers do not get lost. Always ask yourself: will this actually help? Or is it so confusing that it will hinder, instead?
If you do not understand how something works, how are you going to explain it clearly enough that a third party (i.e. the reader) will understand? Make sure that, before you attempt to get anything down on paper, you are completely 100% aware of even the most subtle nuances of the subject you are tackling. Only when this is done can you even think about starting. Additionally, try to look at the problem from multiple angles and ask all sorts of questions. Is your work covering all the angles? Does it answer all the questions - even the ones you think are completely basic and everyone will know? Remember that not everyone has your expertise or knowledge!
